Young leaves and stems are cooked and used as a vegetable with a crunchy tender texture.

Plants are sometimes cultivated for the potash obtained from their stems. 

The ashes of the burnt plant are used for making glass and soap.

Sow spring in situ. Should succeed outdoors in many parts of the UK. 

Information about this species is limited, but it probably requires a very sunny position in a light or medium well-drained soil, tolerating salty soils, occasional inundation by salt water and maritime exposure, and should succeed in poor soils.
